A sewer line problem is the one that affects the whole house at once. Multiple fixtures back up, a floor drain overflows, or a foul smell shows up in the yard. The line that carries everything away has either clogged badly, cracked, sagged into a low spot, or been invaded by roots, and no amount of clearing one sink is going to touch it.
The right first move is a camera, not a shovel. The camera comes before the excavator
We run the camera from a cleanout and watch the line on screen. Roots show as fine intrusions at a joint. A sag, what the trade calls a belly, shows as standing water that solids settle into. A crack or offset joint shows as a break in the pipe wall. Older sections of Foley may still have clay or early plastic sewer pipe that has had decades to shift; newer subdivisions have PVC that fails at joints when the ground moves under it. Not every sewer call is a dig. A line coated with years of grease and scale often just needs a {hydro} and a re inspection to confirm the pipe underneath is sound. A single root intrusion at one joint can sometimes be cleared and sealed. It is the cracked, collapsed or badly sagging line that needs a section replaced, and even then the goal is the smallest open trench the break allows, or a trenchless method where the layout permits it.
Why a septic property is a different conversation
Parts of Foley and much of rural south Baldwin County run on septic rather than a municipal sewer. A slow or backing up drain on a septic property can be the tank or the drainfield rather than the line, and sandy soil with a high water table is hard on drainfields. Can roots really break a sewer pipe?
They can, and they are one of the most common causes we find on older lines. Roots seek the moisture at a pipe joint, work in through the smallest gap, and expand until they crack the pipe or block it solid. On a young line the fix is clearing and sealing; on an old pipe that roots keep finding, replacing the compromised section is the lasting answer.
